How can we shape the future of our communities and of the planet? How will we cultivate and heal our relationship with the Earth? This course will explore the history of the environmental justice movement in Chicago and beyond, with a specific focus on Black and Indigenous activist lineages. We will create activist art inspired by the principles of EJ, investigate air quality, local ecosystems, and soil biology/ecology, and learn how we can contribute to current environmental justice movement work.

Liberation Education Collective offers virtual extracurricular courses on the topics young people want to learn.

Vision Statement

Liberation Education Collective (LEC) cultivates the next generation of activists by providing extracurricular education that unapologetically dives into the content public school curricula are increasingly forced to omit.

Through interdisciplinary lessons, participatory action research, and skill-building in ELA, humanities, & social sciences, LEC helps young people to steward liberatory frameworks into age-appropriate collective action against political repression.

Expected Outcomes for Students

Young people will become more excited about learning, due to our non-hierarchical, participatory approach to the teacher/student relationship

Impacting Worlds

Young people will learn how to take tangible, impactful actions that reduce the power and scope of institutions and structures that harm marginalized communities

Engaging Communities

Young people will gain the skills and knowledge to become participatory members of their community & learn to be in solidarity with historically marginalized communities
